Pittsburgh-born, Krista found her calling in a place thousands of miles from her first home. Her journey began when a study-abroad experience studying public health in India, South Africa, and Brazil drastically shifted her perspective. It was this realization that led her to Cape Town, where she took on a role in a social impact-focused organization, working on healthcare for under-resourced public schools.

Though this role was in line with her public health background, it was education that caught Krista's attention: “I began recognising its role as the foundation for healthy, productive communities.”

In 2019, her interests converged when she joined Injini as the Head of Operations. Injini is Africa's Edtech Accelerator that focuses on supporting and accelerating startups that strive to enhance the quality, accessibility, and relevance of education across sub-Saharan Africa. Fast-forwarding to today, she's the Executive Director, responsible for charting the strategic direction of the organization. "When a vacancy came about at Injini, I was thrilled that it brought together all my interests,” she recalls fondly.

Injini's mission resonates with Krista's passion for tech startups that foster positive change in education across Africa. It's a hands-on, results-driven approach that's at the core of her work. She believes in the potential of African entrepreneurs to address African challenges, a conviction that's not just a slogan for her but something she actively nurtures.

"My poor team at Injini knows I'm constantly asking them to try out the latest productivity tool to see if we can work even more tech into our workflow," she says with a grin, encapsulating her endless curiosity for technological enhancements.

"In retrospect, we relied way too much on theory in developing the business concepts and building out our models," Krista recalls of her early entrepreneurial days. "We'd learn more with just a few hours of prospective user interviews than weeks of desktop research." The onset of the pandemic presented both challenges and opportunities for Injini. As many organizations scrambled to adapt, Krista led a decisive pivot from Edtech incubation to acceleration. "We got to very measurably see how our more Edtech-specialised support interventions became more valuable to the startups that were relatively more mature in terms of business traction," she explains. The shift to acceleration was not just a reaction to global circumstances but a deliberate move to create a more substantial impact on the education sector.

But Krista's vision extends beyond the immediate functions of Injini. The Injini Think Tank, under her guidance, is on a mission to foster collaboration and influence decision-making in the education sector across Africa. It's a hub for localized industry research, insightful data, and bespoke market research, all aimed at creating an enabling environment for innovative Edtech solutions.

"We hope to lead the charge in driving education innovation across Africa, forging a future where every individual, regardless of background or circumstance, can access world-class learning opportunities and unlock their fullest potential.” Krista’s clear and unapologetic ambition to better the continent, her moonshot, is something that I can’t help but feel we should all have. It’s something the world needs more of.

"What excites me the most," Krista says, her eyes lighting up, "is the renewed focus on supporting and enabling teachers in Africa. Seeing Edtech entrepreneurs identifying opportunities to make teachers' lives easier, gives me hope that we may still attract bright young minds to the teaching profession." This trend isn't just a business opportunity for Krista; it's a hopeful sign of recognizing and uplifting one of society's most critical professions.

Krista shares the example of the Mastercard Foundation Edtech Fellowship Program, where partnerships are being established, and market access is growing for those involved.

"When assessing the success of supported Edtech startups, we typically look at both commercial metrics alongside social impact metrics," she explains, underscoring the balance between business growth and social influence that defines Injini's approach.

As a founding team member of Digest Financial Solutions, she played a key role as the Editor-in-Chief, simplifying financial literacy for South African millennials. It was a different playing field, but her commitment to making complex topics accessible remained consistent.

Her appointment as an Advisory Board Member for the Future for Work Africa 2021 Programme further emphasizes her active engagement with the continent's progressive movements.
