The alliance unveils ‘Ecosia Trains,’ an exciting rail travel booking tool that not only simplifies the way people plan their journeys but also contributes directly to reforestation efforts around the globe.

Ecosia, renowned for its unwavering dedication to green initiatives, has partnered with Omio, a travel technology platform, to create a product that embodies the ethos of responsible travel. ‘Ecosia Trains’ serves as an extension of Ecosia's mission, diverting profits towards tree-planting projects in biodiversity hot spots, regenerative agriculture initiatives, and investments in renewable energy.

The impact of this collaboration is expected to be substantial, as Ecosia boasts an impressive user base of 20 million individuals globally. This new travel tool will be accessible in 15 countries, including not only Germany but also the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and France. With a simple keyword query related to trains or destinations suitable for rail travel, users will be greeted by the seamless integration of the booking platform within Ecosia's search engine.

Beyond the convenience of planning rail journeys, ‘Ecosia Trains’ carries a significant environmental promise. Unlike many conventional offsetting practices, where carbon emissions are balanced out rather than directly addressed, the commissions earned from successful bookings will directly finance Ecosia's green initiatives. This refreshing approach aligns with the global call for more impactful actions to tackle climate change.

Michael Metcalf, Chief Product Officer of Ecosia, underscores the significance of user demand for sustainable travel options. “As the climate crisis intensifies, the demand for train travel – especially longer distance journeys that replace short and medium-haul flights – is higher than ever,” he stated. “Aviation remains a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Our users want choice over how they travel, and they want to travel sustainably - that’s evident in the sheer volume of searches we’re seeing each month on Ecosia. If a healthy proportion of the 2 million searches made for train journeys on Ecosia each month translate into bookings, this will allow us to invest in our other environmental initiatives pushing back against the climate emergency.”

‘Ecosia Trains’ features a lineup of prominent rail providers, including well-known names like Amtrak in the U.S., LNER, GWR, and Avanti in the U.K., SNCF in France, OBB in Austria, and Eurostar for cross-channel services. Omio's expansive platform, renowned for its diversity in travel options across 37 countries and 21 languages, forms the bedrock of this collaborative venture.

This partnership's potential impact on the environment is substantial, with Ecosia having already planted nearly 180 million trees across diverse regions such as Brazil, Australia, Madagascar, and the US.
