Our main character is a Fintech compliance expert by day and an ambidextrous artist with a social media following of hundreds of thousands by night.
This isn’t the pitch for my latest novel—it’s the real life of Colin Darke.
If the line between art and technology seems blurred, Colin Darke might just be the very embodiment of that confluence. A son to an artist mother and a lawyer father, Colin's personal and professional narrative weaves between these worlds.
Born in 1977 as the youngest of five, Colin recounts a bustling household where art and law frequently danced in tandem. "The combination of the law and art has always been a part of my environment.” With siblings straddling professions in both realms, the juxtaposition of creativity and jurisprudence was ever-present. One might even say it was destiny for Colin to embrace both.
His journey through the legal corridors of Fintech is almost as mesmerizing as his ambidextrous artistry. On his social platforms, he posts videos of himself drawing and painting ambidextrously — creating symmetrical images or two entirely distinct pieces simultaneously. This unusual talent has garnered him not just admiration from over 700,000 followers but also nods of approval from big names like P!nk and Shakira.
Colin has consistently positioned himself at the intersection of policy, innovation, and education, evident from his roles like the Senior Advisor for Fintech Training and Educational Programming at the American Fintech Council. But it's not just about the Fintech cosmos for Colin. His endeavors include a commitment to mentorship and nurturing growth, as he took initiatives in structuring leadership training at Rocket Loans.
Yet, despite his significant achievements in the Fintech world, Colin remains grounded. Perhaps, his rootedness comes from that artistic side, which serves as a constant reminder of his humble beginnings and the blend of creativity and discipline that defines him.
"For the longest time, I only focused on making art and on being the class clown, so my academics were not great," he confesses. But life, as it often does, took an interesting turn. Post his art days during his bachelor’s degree, Colin found himself diving deep into the world of law and finance, embarking on an illustrious journey that saw him donning numerous hats - from being an attorney for financial institutions, aiding in regulatory compliance, to serving as the Chief Compliance Officer at Rocket Loans.
Siblings too walked these parallel paths — his two older brothers being attorneys and a sister, an artist and art therapist. This blend may seem an improbable marriage to some, but for Colin, the union has been both harmonious and beneficial.
He recalls, "I was completely on my own financially when I went to Western." A series of jobs, from cashier to landscaper, helped him pay for his education. He even had to press pause on his studies at one point to make ends meet. "Having to drop out for a bit was really eye-opening for me," he admits. But what's fascinating is that even amidst these challenges, Colin's artistic side found a voice. Selling a couple of paintings during this time, he experienced a discomfort in parting with his art, an emotion he can't quite pin down even today.
Yet, despite this unsettling feeling, it was a conversation with his brother, Sean, that nudged him towards a legal path. "Sean mentioned he was going to take the LSAT. I decided I would also take it." With a renewed zest for learning and a competitive streak, Colin and Sean both ventured to Michigan State College of Law. Their choice of institution held a sentimental touch, continuing the legacy started by their father at Detroit College of Law.
The question, of course, arises: how does one reconcile the intuitive, free-flowing nature of art with the structured, logical world of law? Colin explains, "I am good at simplifying complex ideas and at problem-solving." For him, the act of breaking down intricate thoughts in art mirrors the legal process of dissecting convoluted cases. "My creativity in art is engaged when I am trying to simplify complex thoughts," he says. It's an enlightening perspective that sheds light on his unique ability to navigate both worlds. And, when the weight of the legal world becomes too much? "I can sit down and draw or paint, and it brings me complete peace," he shares.
Colin's journey hasn't been devoid of hurdles. The very challenges that made his college years demanding also imbued him with an indomitable spirit. "The process of pushing through setbacks truly gave me a work ethic and grit," he reflects. These early life failures, rather than breaking him, fortified his resilience, teaching him humility and the importance of continuous self-improvement.
It was a challenge from Gary Vaynerchuk, digital marketing mogul, that served as the spark for Colin to project his artistic talent to the world, where he was inspired “to not overthink things and just create.” His posts on social media were not only captivating because of the art but also due to his unique ambidextrous technique. This skill, one that had been with him since childhood and once thought mundane, turned out to be his claim to fame. It offered solace to many during the uncertainty of lockdown, proving once again that there's comfort in the simplest of actions.
Simultaneously, in the world of Fintech compliance, Colin maneuvers with a finesse that stems from being an astute listener and proactive learner. It's not just about knowing the rules; it's about understanding the "why" behind them. His approach of building relationships and actively participating in the industry is commendable. And his advocacy for clarity and proactive education is reflected in his drive to share knowledge, be it through conferences or articles.
The foundations of his life advice? Surround yourself with intellectual stimuli, let your actions be dictated by core values, and have a personal board of directors to guide you. His personal board, including family and professionals, has been pivotal in helping him make some of the most significant decisions in his life, such as joining Canvas and establishing Colin Darke Solutions.
A self-proclaimed lifelong learner, Colin's commitment to continuous education has undeniably carved the path he walks on today. Whether it's through the plethora of books he's consumed on Audible or the online courses he takes, his quest for knowledge is unending. This thirst has not only benefited his career but has also propelled him to share and teach more.
The future, as envisioned by Colin Darke, promises to be as multifaceted and vibrant as his past. With projects lined up that are as varied as they are essential, Colin continues to blend his diverse passions in ways most can only dream of.
At the forefront of his endeavors lies his commitment to education. The Fintech Compliance 101 Bootcamp aims to equip novices in the Fintech regulatory compliance sphere with the tools they need to excel, a nod to the rapidly evolving world of Fintech where timely training is imperative. Similarly, the Online Drawing Camp, a venture alongside his sister, marries the world of art and therapy, emphasizing the therapeutic capabilities of drawing. It's a reflection of Colin's belief in the power of art to heal and rejuvenate, and by making it a shared experience with a family member, it’s poised to strengthen familial bonds as well.
Marrying art and compliance, Colin is also in the process of creating a Compliance Technology company. Here, he seeks to leverage his dual expertise to create a Compliance Management System that's both intuitive and visually appealing. This project is emblematic of his unique ability to spot synergies where others might see dichotomies.
In partnership with his law firm, GwC, the Regulatory Compliance Hotline is an endeavor that promises to democratize access to expert insights. With a flat monthly fee, businesses can now have their pressing compliance queries addressed by seasoned professionals, a clear indicator of Colin's commitment to promoting responsible and compliant Fintech practices.
Colin's foresight into the Fintech landscape is this. The collaboration between regulators, traditional banks, and tech enterprises is slated to intensify, leading to holistic solutions that prioritize consumer safety. With state and federal regulators now recruiting tech and AI experts, it's evident that there's a concerted push towards understanding and integrating pioneering technologies, especially those addressing challenges like BSA/AML compliance.
The American Fintech Council, with Colin as a Senior Advisor, emphasizes the centrality of Fintech training and educational programming. Knowledge dissemination becomes the backbone of meaningful dialogue and innovation. If all stakeholders are equipped with a uniform understanding of regulations and consumer protection, the conversations shift from potential roadblocks to avenues for responsible advancement. Colin's analogy of preferring "speed bumps" over "brick walls" encapsulates this vision aptly: fostering innovation while ensuring it's tempered with caution.
Colin’s approach to the future reinforces a core principle that seems to guide his endeavors: the belief in continuous education and the power of collaborative dialogue. Drawing parallels between art and business, he points out that constraints, rather than curbing creativity, often act as catalysts for it. True innovation flourishes when it harmonizes with protective frameworks, like those ensuring data security and privacy. For Colin, the heart of innovation is problem-solving, which thrives on clear constraints and open dialogue. He poignantly recounts the ethos of developers as problem solvers, underscoring the importance of transparent communication over dictatorial mandates.
His involvement as Interim Director of Compliance at Scratch Financial offers a glimpse into the tangible impacts of Fintech in our day-to-day lives. By facilitating patient finance solutions, especially in sectors like veterinary services, Fintech becomes not just a buzzword but a vehicle of accessibility. It promises a world where essential services aren't bound by traditional financial hurdles.
Colin paints a promising future where Fintech liberates traditional banking processes from their labor-intensive shackles, giving individuals the space to realize their true potential, not in rote tasks, but in fostering creativity and developing groundbreaking solutions.
Colin’s hands work together, in tandem, to create things that connect with us. I can’t help but feel that echoes his sentiment of collaboration in the world of Fintech, where innovation and security aren't mutually exclusive but can co-exist harmoniously.
In essence, Colin's journey is a blend of intellect, creativity, perseverance, and continuous growth. He epitomizes what it means to be multi-dimensional, reminding us that behind every professional can be a brilliant creative whose passions extend beyond the workplace. Colin is also proving that it's entirely possible to excel in seemingly contrasting fields. And as he paints and practices, one can't help but wonder: what canvas will he paint on next?
